The word 'whenua' means both 'placenta' and 'land' in te reo. This is no coincidence - it reflects the deep and symbiotic connection Māori have with the land. During the New Zealand Wars, the government confiscated land from Māori who were said to have "rebelled". Efforts to recover this stolen land persist today.
