Hundreds of people have gathered to protest against a new housing development planned for the land at Ihumātao (Te ihu o Mataaho). The Ihumātao occupation is a protest centred on protecting spiritually and historically significant land. And more broadly, it is a protest against the enduring impacts of colonialism in Aotearoa.

On Friday 26th July, prime minister Jacinda Ardern announced at a press conference that no building work would occur at Ihumātao until a solution was reached.
