Second border-related case in community

A second border-related case who has been in the community is being reported today. The case is an Air New Zealand crew member who worked on a flight between Auckland and Sydney on 24 December.

The case was fully vaccinated. Eight close contacts have been identified, seven of whom have returned negative test results.

At this stage, there are no known locations of interest.

Yesterday, whole genome sequencing detected a border-related case of Omicron who had briefly been active in the community.

The case, an international DJ known as Dimension, is a recent international arrival who returned a positive result on day nine of their self-isolation period. They had previously returned three negative tests for COVID-19 while completing 7 days of managed isolation at a facility in Auckland.

They were tested on day nine but did not wait for a negative test result before self-releasing.

Only a small number of contacts of this case attended the Hidden Lakes Festival, all of whom had negative tests beforehand. The Ministry of Health has said the public health risk associated with this event has been assessed as low.

The Ministry also added that at this stage, "there are no known contacts or cases associated with Rhythm & Alps festival."

Canterbury DHB has become the third DHB area to be 95 percent fully vaccinated, joining Auckland DHB and Capital and Coast DHB.

94 percent of New Zealand's eligible population have had the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, and 91 percent have had a second dose.

There have been 4,581,801 vaccine pass downloads, including 18,582 in the last 24 hours.
