"Our thoughts are with the family, whānau and friends who have requested that their privacy be respected at this sad time," said the Ministry of Health in today's release.

There are currently 11 people in hospital, with no cases in intensive care.

The average age of people currently in hospital is 58.

Due to technical issues, approximately 40 further cases in Auckland have not been entered into the Ministry of Health's reporting systems.

"We are working to resolve the issue and the additional cases will be reported tomorrow," officials said in a statement.

96 percent of New Zealand's eligible population have had the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, and 94 percent have had a second dose. There have been 1,287,972 booster doses administered.

33 percent of 5-11 year-olds have received the first dose of the vaccine.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Governor-General Cindy Kiro have been tested and are isolating after being in close contact with a case on a flight from Kerikeri to Auckland on January 22. The prime minister reportedly has no symptoms and is feeling well.

The most common symptoms of the Omicron variant are a sore, scratchy throat, and a runny nose. If you have these symptoms, the Ministry of Health advises to get a test and stay home until you receive a negative test.

More locations have been added to the locations of interest list including bus journeys between Gisborne, Napier and Wellington that have been linked to the new MidCentral case and a case in Tairāwhiti. See here for the full list.
