There are 9,109 new cases of Covid-19 today and 20 people with the virus have died.

Of these cases there are 266 in Northland, 2,678 in Auckland, 547 in Waikato, 280 in Bay of Plenty, 167 in Lakes, 283 in Hawke’s Bay, 365 in MidCentral, 121 in Whanganui, 249 in Taranaki, 88 in Tairāwhiti, 89 in Wairarapa, 437 in Capital and Coast, 433 in Hutt Valley, 332 in Nelson Marlborough, 1,586 in Canterbury, 161 in South Canterbury, 947 in Southern, 78 in West Coast, 2 in unknown locations. 

There are currently 55,588 active cases in the community. 

The Ministry of Health defines active cases as those identified in the last seven days and not yet classified as recovered.

Today’s seven-day rolling average of case numbers is 7,943 – last Tuesday it was 8,085.

Since the pandemic started, the total of confirmed Covid-19 cases is 949,323. 

Hospitalisations and Covid-19 related deaths

20 people with Covid-19 have died, bringing the total to date to 777. 

The deaths being reported today include people who have died over the previous eight days.

Of the people whose deaths are being reporting today, one person was from Northland, one person was from Auckland, two from Waikato, two from Bay of Plenty, four from Tairāwhiti, four from the Greater Wellington region, fiver from Canterbury, and one from Southern.

One person was in their 50s, three in their 60s, three in their 70s eight in their 80s and five were aged over 90.

Of these people, 12 were women and eight were men.

The 7-day rolling average of reported deaths is 13.

There are 481 people in hospital, with 10 of those people in intensive care or high dependency units.

The average age of people currently in hospital is 59.

Vaccinations 

96.4 percent of New Zealand's eligible population have had the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, and 95.2 percent have had a second dose.

70.9 percent of eligible people have had their booster shot.

Testing 

The number of PCR tests taken over the past 24 hours is 3,400 and the number of Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) that have been reported in the past 24 hours is 18,470.
